I agree totally that this is a horrible rule if there is one. Why they would stop anyone from playing in the AHL over 18 is beyond me. If they can play in the NHL why not the AHL.

There is indeed a European exemption. What I am looking into is how it applies, it can be one of 2 ways, either the player has to come directly from Europe as an 18 year old to play in the AHL. The other is that the player if playing in a North American Jr. league may not be able to play in the AHL under the age of 20.

  So the way I'm reading it is that he would have to come over directly from Europe vs. playing North American Jr hockey. I am working to get a definite clarification on it though.

The rule makes sense because it prevents pro teams from stripping the CHL of all it's talent. Voracek was drafted out of the CHL, therefore he either has to turn 20 by December 31st of 2008, or have completed 4 junior seasons. He won't be 20 by then, and he hasn't completed 4 seasons of junior. He can play for Columbus or has to be sent back to juniors for the 2008-2009 season. 

Going by statistics, the crunch should miss the playoffs next year anyways so...just sayin
